The Alliance asked five of our authors to hand write a section of their work or poem and we have reproduced these as A4 sized frame-able prints on beautiful FSC accredited offset paper with the handwritten text above a jacket image of the book. The author will then individually signed each of the 200 prints.

6.       Point of Sale Kits

You should have received all your IBW Point of Sale by now, sent to you via Gardners (many thanks to them!) – please feel free to promote the IBW Book Award Shortlisted titles until the winners are announced on 29^th June.  We will let you know in advance of the announcement who the winners are, and also send you posters for both winning titles (one adult, one children’s), so that you can promote the winners during IBW.  There are also WINNER stickers in the POS Kit.  If you didn’t receive your POS, let me know and we can send you a replacement.

Don’t forget that, once the week is underway, you can send in all your photos and we will post them on the site and post them to social media.  Let’s aim to make indie bookshops and IBW trend on social media again, as we did last year.  The Twitter hashtag for IBW is #IBW2013

Please do take a careful look at all the IBW Collectibles – the more copies of all these fabulous titles are ordered by bookshops, the more likely it is that publishers will continue to offer deals, exclusives and ideas for next year.  We intend to progress the Collectibles every year – if you have ideas for what you would like to see in the Collectibles range in future years, please send in all your ideas and we will consider it all.

Christopher William Hill, award-winning playwright, radio writer and author of Osbert the Avenger, is available for IBW events.   Christopher has taught a lot of courses at the Arvon foundation, and he’s a really funny, interactive speaker.

He’s London based (though willing to do day trips), and is available during IBW for Strictly Come Bookselling, a bookshop event or for school visits.

Hachette also have some  Hugless Douglas event packs  which include Douglas activity sheets, I love hugs stickers and instructions for how to draw Douglas, plus a 45 minute event plan – also a number of Belle & Boo tea party event packs which include bunny ear crowns, postcards, and instructions for playing sleeping bunnies/other party games.

And finally, Teri Terry, author of the Slated series, is keen to either do some events or be a bookseller for a day.  Slated has been shortlisted for four regional awards this year, as well as the Branford Boase award, and it’s been a real YA success for Orchard since it was published in May 2012. Teri does a really interesting event – she has recently completed a research MA on the depiction of terrorism in YA dystopian fiction, and she’s a fab speaker. Teri lives in Buckinghamshire, and is happy to do day trips.

I also want to let you know about the IBW Debate on 3^rd July at the South Bank Centre.  This event is designed to shine a light on bookshops as a key part of the high street, and raise awareness of the role of the bookshop in cultural and community terms.  Chaired by Head of Literature at the South Bank, James Runcie, the Debate – THE PERFECT STORM: Why Bookshops are in the frontline in the battle for the High Street – will feature authors Kate Mosse and Anne Sebba, economic campaigner Lindsay Mackie and bookseller Nic Bottomley.  The Debate will be followed by a drinks reception at Foyles on the South Bank.  Do come along if you can and take part in the Debate and meet fellow booksellers and publishers.  Book here for the Debate

And secondly, Fiction Uncovered are offering independent booksellers the chance to win a Fortnums Hamper and six bottles of prosecco by entering their Window Display Competition – the winner to be announced during IBW.

Now in its third year, Fiction Uncovered celebrates and promotes eight living British writers of any age who have already published at least one novel or short story collection. It is funded by the National Lottery and supported by Arts Council England.  The 2013 Fiction Uncovered selection will be announced on Thursday 16 May 2013 by chair of judges and author Louise Doughty, Sandeep Mahal, (Programme Manager at the Reading Agency), Lynne Hatwell (who blogs at dovegreyreader) and writer Courttia Newland.

This year Independent retailers are invited to enter a Fiction Uncovered window competition from 16 May 2013 with the winner announced in IBW .  The independent bookshop which puts on the best window display featuring the eight titles and celebrating British writing will win a luxury Fortnum and Mason’s hamper and six bottles of prosecco.

Criteria

·      Entries will be judged by the Fiction Uncovered team

·      Please send a minimum x 2 high-resolution JPEG files depicting your display to hello@fictionuncovered.com, by the midday on 1 July.
